Stepping onto a commercial airplane that has been customized as a business jet shows just what it means to fly with more: more comfort, convenience, flexibility, efficiency and reliability.

It means VIPs and their families can enjoy the privacy of different zones on the airplane. Some can relax in a spacious living room-like lounge while others can stay connected to work in a private office, get quality rest in a large master suite, or enjoy a gourmet meal around a real dining table.

Built on a century of Boeing’s experience building VIP aircraft , Boeing Business Jets (BBJ) specializes in taking ultra-large cabin, long-range jets and creating personalized spaces. Passengers feel surrounded by the comforts of home while traveling the world.

And there’s demand for it.

Business jet departures globally have increased by over 30% from 2019 to 2024. Regions like Latin America, Africa and Australia/Asia Pacific have all seen triple-digit growth in business aviation departures over the last five years.

A variety of factors are shaping that growth, including increased demand for productive travel
as well as growing comfort expectations while on board. It also helps passengers solve for private security needs, flexibility in scheduling and flight availability to more remote locations.

Those patterns are shaping how airplane manufacturers like Boeing think about what business jet passengers, charter airlines, governments and heads of state want in a travel experience.

Embraer Design Operations created an award-winning space for the BBJ’s spacious interior.

One of the hallmarks of a BBJ is its customized interior, which buyers can tailor to meet any needs of VIP customers. They can personally design and hand-select interior elements, features and materials, working with partner designers and completion centers, or opt for a turnkey aircraft solution where Boeing Business Jets manages the VIP interior from start to finish.

Based on feedback from their customers, Boeing recently launched BBJ Select on the upcoming 737-7. By choosing from a catalog of interior modules, this option allows for a high level of customization that is more cost-effective and timelier than the bespoke solution.

Owners can customize three airplane lounge areas as well as another private space. For example, toward the forward – or front part – of the aircraft, a customer can choose if they want a sectional sofa paired with a large television for entertaining, a large desk with adjacent seating for business meetings, or lie-flat seating for increased sleeping space. Those spaces are in addition to the elegant stateroom and spa-inspired lavatory toward the aft, or rear, of the airplane.

BBJ Select also offers three unique color palettes for the cabin interior: Serene, Midnight and Earthbound. The cabin interior and color combinations of BBJ Select give customers a significant number of unique, near-bespoke combinations all while reducing cost and complexity of buying and configuring a private jet.

Passenger experience and well-being continue to reshape airplane interior design. Boeing Business Jets took home the award for best private jet design at the 2024 International Yacht & Aviation Awards, sponsored by Design et al.

The BBJ cabin interior, known as Elysium, is designed to accommodate more passengers with additional space to sleep, dine and relax.

M&R Associates Design, one of BBJ’s design partners, created a bespoke, custom cabin that caters to passenger comfort and well-being. Advanced in-flight entertainment systems and ergonomic seating create an immersive environment where passengers can relax or be productive.

Boeing has a team of experts that is constantly improving the cabin, its features, and the overall passenger experience while onboard airplanes. That means conducting research, establishing partnerships and developing thoughtful designs that offer customers more sustainable interiors options. The results determine how to more effectively serve passengers’ needs aboard the airplane.

Having a commercial jetliner serving as the ultimate business jet also gives BBJ access to a global network of what it takes to efficiently operate an airplane the size of a 737 MAX. More than 1,500 737 MAX airplanes fly about 700,000 passengers on 5,500 revenue flights daily to destinations around the world.

While supporting customized travel needs, the 737 airframe has evolved to reduce environmental impact from its first version of BBJ in 1997 to the latest BBJ 737-7, 737-8 and 737-9, all part of the BBJ 737 MAX family. The newest models reduce fuel use and emissions by 20% compared to the airplanes they replace while creating a 50% smaller noise footprint.

In addition to these improvements, Boeing is working with the aerospace industry to decarbonize air travel for all. For nearly 20 years, Boeing has been pioneering global efforts to make sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) a reality and today, its efforts are more energized than ever. The company is acting on its commitment to ensure all the commercial airplanes Boeing delivers will be compatible with 100% SAF by 2030 and is establishing partnerships around the globe to scale SAF production for all.

Sustainability is a focus not just in how the airplane operates but in the interior build as well. Manufacturers are making interior materials lighter, more sustainable in production, and they are directing fewer interior components to the landfill after a retrofit of cabin refresh.

Boeing Business Jets has been at the forefront of customizing ultra-large cabin, long-range jets for nearly 30 years, providing VIPs with enhanced travel experiences with more comfort, convenience, flexibility, efficiency and reliability. BBJ offers tailored interiors through options like BBJ Select, allowing customers to choose from a catalog of modules for various spaces, while also providing unique color palettes. The latest BBJ models, including the 737-7, 737-8, and 737-9, not only focus on passenger comfort with advanced designs but also emphasize sustainability, reducing fuel use and emissions by 20% compared to their predecessors.

It means that, with BBJ, a lot of thought has gone into what it means to fly for those seeking a flying experience that offers the space and world-class comfort passengers need to fly farther.
